Lisa Unger

Emotional and Eating Disorder Therapist

I am an emotional and eating disorder specialist. I help people to make long term changes to the way they think about food and themselves.

With support, they can feel empowered and have the freedom to regain control of their lives. With compassion and understanding, I know that change and recovery is possible.

About

I understand that escaping the dieting mindset is really hard, after struggling with my own eating disorder for many years. I tried every diet there was, yoyo-ing between restricting myself to certain foods and then bingeing in secret when I couldn’t keep to my plan. As my weight increased, so did my shame, frustration and hate for myself and my body. It was soul destroying and I felt such a failure.

I had to learn about myself. It wasn’t easy and it took time for me to understand where my struggles were coming from. It wasn’t about what I ate, but about how I ate, and all the feelings behind why I was eating, that were keeping me stuck in my unhealthy relationship with food. It was only when I learnt how to make long term, sustainable changes to my behaviour around food, that I began to recover from my disorder.

I have been motivated by my experiences to want to help others battling with the same or similar issues, which is why I have become an emotional and eating disorder specialist.

Approach

I am committed to providing the support, compassion, and understanding that is needed to overcome the challenges people face. No matter where they are on their journey, I will equip them with the tools and strategies necessary to develop a healthier relationship with food and their body. .
Together, we explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviours to discover what is keeping them stuck in unhelpful cycles. I will guide them how to break free from those patterns and to regain a sense of control and empowerment in their life.
